INTRODUCTION
"MARVIN'S BIDDING HANDBOOK" contains everything I have written on
the subject of contract bridge bidding over the last 20 years. It
is divided into "books" whose titles appear on the opening menu.
Selecting a book from the menu brings up a menu of "chapters" for
the selected book. Selecting a chapter results in its display on
the screen. Be sure to press the F1 key (try it now) to discover
the various user options that are available.
For faster run speed, if the handbook is on a diskette it should
be copied to a hard disk or ram disk directory, and the software
run from there.
The reader may not like a lot of my bidding conventions, treat-
ments, or philosophy, but will surely find some acceptable ideas.
At least this bidding handbook can be used as a checklist of
bidding situations: Have you and your partner agreed on the meaning
of all bids found herein, or on the bids that should be used for
all hands described herein? I especially refer the reader to the
chapters FORCING AND NON-FORCING SITUATIONS in the book "Four-Card
Majors" and 4NT - BLACKWOOD OR NATURAL? in the book "Strong
Bidding." These contain many sequences that partnerships should
agree on: forcing, not forcing, Blackwood, not Blackwood.
The handbook chapters consist of standard ASCII files, which can
be read into any respectable word processing program for formatting
(e.g., add a left margin and page breaks) and printing. Be sure to
tell the word processor that you are "importing" an ASCII file. Or
the files can be printed straight out when being viewed (press
"P"), but the page breaks will not be acceptable, with bidding
sequences and other stuff that should be on one page sometimes
split onto two pages.
The file "files.doc" associates a file name with every chapter of
every book, for use by those who want to import handbook text into
a word processing program. Be sure to export any revised file back
from whence it came in ASCII format, and don't change any file
names.
Here's a project for partnerships that have not documented their
understandings: Edit the ASCII files to change everything that you
disagree with, or eliminate what is not wanted, or add what is
wanted. Then the partnership will have its own handbook. Do not
remove any files completely, or change any file names.
This handbook may be freely copied and distributed to anyone, and
the possessor is encouraged to do so. I ask only two favors: That
none of the contents be used for money-making purposes, and that
any errors, omissions, or inconsistencies found be reported to me.
Some of the chapters in "Countermeasures" and "Marvin's Conventions
and Treatments" are somewhat abbreviated. Any such have a note at
the end of the file revealing what has been left out. The full text
for both of these books may be purchased from the author, in the
form of a 3.5" HD diskette (that is not to be copied!) identical
to this handbook but with the unabridged text of all chapters.
Price is $30, which includes postage and, for Californians, sales
tax.
Another unabridged diskette, on card play and bridge partying, is
available for $25. Entitled "CONTRACT BRIDGE PLAY AND PARTYING,"
it contains the following books:
Defense vs Notrump Contracts
Defense vs Suit Contracts
Basic Squeezes for Advanced Players
Party Bridge
Social Duplicate Bridge
The books on defense cover opening leads, later leads, continua-
tions, second hand play, third hand play, and signals.
